According to the information made public by the Naftogas Ukrainy national joint stock company on its website www.naftogaz.com, the recent geological exploration findings show that the Black Sea shelf can in the future become Ukraine’s oil and gas production base. The potential resources of the Ukrainian area of the Black Sea and the Azov Sea continental shelf are estimated to be over 1.5 billion tons of standard fuel. However, their current exploitation does not exceed 4 per cent.
Following the discovery in 1969 of considerable oil fields on its continental shelf, Norway has made dramatic steps to develop its offshore oil production technology and innovations. Norwegian expertise and knowledge in this field could be of considerable interest and use to Ukraine, whose near-term ambition is to further exploration and development of the oil and gas resources of the Black Sea and the Azov Sea continental shelf.
