Norway founds international Ibsen award

One hundred years after his death, Henrik Ibsen's works are still influential around the world. The Ibsen award aims to stimulate others to follow the Ibsen spirit through critical debates on crucial societal and existentialist questions.

12/09/2006 :: The international Ibsen award will be in the amount of NOK 1, 5 million (EUR 180 000) and will be awarded to an individual, organisation or institution within the fields of arts and culture that has made an extraordinary contribution in the spirit of Ibsen. Stipends of NOK 1 million (EUR 120 000) will also be awarded to different Ibsen related projects around the world.

"Henrik Ibsen's work had and still has great relevance on both national and international levels. His plays are performed on stages around the world. This year alone there are 2800 performances in different countries. The audience is still provoked and challenged by the contents of his work. The [Norwegian] government has decided to found an international Ibsen award. The award will stimulate continued critical debates on crucial societal and existentialist topics," Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said.

"This is an important event. In addition to stimulating a critical debate, we also hope this award will receive international attention and prestige, that it increases contact across national boarders and contributes to promote Norway's reputation," Norwegian Minister of Culture and Church Affairs Trond Giske added.

2006 is an important year for the promotion of Ibsen both nationally and internationally, as it marks 100 years since the world renowned author died. Ibsen events are taking place all over the world and to locate an event near you, visit www.ibsenworldwide.info and www.ibsen.net
