Music in Norway

Contemporary Norwegian music is very much a part of the international music scene. Names that are familiar beyond Norway’s borders include Röyksopp, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Jan Garbarek, Arne Nordheim, Mari Boine, Leif Ove Andsnes, Nils Petter Molvær, Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz, Rolf Wallin, Turbonegro, Truls Mørk, Bugge Wesseltoft, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and Jaga Jazzist.

These artists are part of a history and a music community described in the following. These pages provide information about and links to Norwegian musicians, bands, composers, organizations and performance institutions.

Users are invited to begin their musical journey with a visit to the digital music shop musikkonline.no, where it is possible to download sound files of all types of Norwegian music. Thirty seconds of each cut is available for free. Downloading of individual tracks or entire CDs can be purchased by credit card.

For information on performances of Norwegian music in Norway and abroad, please consult the calendar published by Music Information Centre Norway. The centre also has a news service in English, which provides up-to-date information about Norwegian music.
