Ukraine is a country with a rapidly developing economy and market opportunities. The Norwegian Embassy in Kiev has a trade representative assigned to help Norwegian trade and industry find opportunities in the Ukrainian market. A Norwegian-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce was established in Oslo on 22 November 2008 and will soon start its activities in support of bilateral business development.
The Embassy assists Norwegian business and industry (and in some cases Ukrainian) within the scope of a work plan in this field, see below. Special focus areas are tourism, seafood, mining, hydro power, bioenergy, shipping and the maritime sector, and the petroleum sector. Telecommunications and information technology are already very promising and developing areas of Norwegian-Ukrainian cooperation.

The Norwegian Embassy in Kiev is engaged in a range of activities aimed at promoting and increasing Norwegian-Ukrainian trade and investments.
General export services
The Embassy provides "General export services" to Norwegian companies and also provides limited assistance to Ukrainian businesses seeking information or partners in Norway.
1. Free of charge
The Embassy provides readily available information and assistance which is not very time consuming (2-3 hours). Examples: long and short lists of Ukrainian companies by economic sectors; advising on standard procedure of registering an entity in Ukraine; search for information on legal aspects of exim operations of particular commodity groups etc.
2. Paid services
In cooperation with Innovation Norway (Moscow office) the Embassy provides services which involve more extensive research and analysis. Time wise this work can range from 10 hours to 2-3 weeks and longer, and may require outsourcing of information and services. Examples: partner search, market overview and research, arrangement of fact finding trips to Ukraine, organisation of and interpretation during meetings etc.
Special focus sectors
Business development in the following sectors are given priority by the Embassy. The Embassy ensures some media monitoring and distributes market updates among Norwegian exporters, investors and other relevant actors. The aim is to produce and regularly update "fact sheets" for each sector.
1. Tourism
- Maintenance and updating a list of Ukrainian tour operators selling or intending to start selling Nordic destination;
- Distribution of Norwegian brochures on tourism and holiday making in Norway within Ukraine;
- Participation at UITT 2008, including hosting a reception for Norwegian tour operators and their Ukrainian partners;
- Organising presentations and individual meetings for Norwegian travel companies and organisations upon request.
2. Seafood
- Maintenance and updating a list of Ukrainian seafood importers and producers;
- Distribution of Norwegian brochures on seafood among Ukrainian seafood market operators;
- Participation or attendance of major food fairs in Kiev, including hosting a reception during the World Food fair;
- Organising presentations and individual meetings for Norwegian seafood companies.
3. Mining
- Creation of a list of Ukrainian mining companies with subsequent dissemination among Norwegian suppliers of mining technology and equipment.
- Distribution of Norwegian brochures on mining industry among Ukrainian mining companies;
- Advising Norwegian companies about any upcoming sectoral exhibitions and conferences, facilitation their participation at such events.
4. Hydro power
- Maintenance and updating of a list of Ukrainian hydropower plants and operating companies with subsequent dissemination among Norwegian suppliers of hydropower technology and equipment;
- Distribution of Norwegian brochures on hydropower among Ukrainian power companies;
- Advising Norwegian companies about any upcoming sectoral exhibitions and conferences, facilitation their participation at such events.
5. Bio-energy
- Creation of a list of entities interested in attracting Norwegian companies to participate in bio-energy projects in Ukraine.
- Advising Norwegian companies about any upcoming sectoral exhibitions and conferences, facilitation their participation at such events.
6. Shipbuilding and maritime sector
- Distribution of Norwegian brochures on the shipbuilding industry among Ukrainian shipyards;
- Advising the Norwegian companies about any upcoming sectoral exhibitions and conferences, facilitation their participation at such events.
7. Petroleum sector
- Creation of a list of entities interested in attracting Norwegian companies to participate in or supply equipment or services to oil & gas-projects in Ukraine.
- Distribution of Norwegian brochures on oil and gas industry among Ukrainian oil & gas companies;
- Advising Norwegian companies about any upcoming sectoral exhibitions and conferences, facilitation of their participation at such events.
Observation areas
In addition to the "Special focus sectors" the Embassy monitors the general state of the Ukrainian economy, economic policy and developments in such key areas as real estate, ICT, financing, energy, transport, agriculture etc. Of particular additional interest are:
- Ukrainian scientific and industrial research, and development activities, for instance through innovation parks, technoparks, incubators
- Activities funded as Norwegian "Industrial Research and Development Contracts"
- Operations of the Norwegian investment fund for Eastern Europe (managed by Innovation Norway)
- SeedForum's activities in Ukraine
- Activities of international financing institutions of which Norway is a member, primarily the IMF, IBRD, EBRD, NIB and NEFCO
Supporting activities
The Embassy is involved in a range of other cooperation activities in Ukraine of general relevance to strategic business development, such as good governance, education and research, culture, health and the environment. Our aim is to seek business synergies, inter alia through:
- Contact with relevant Ukrainian entities, such at government ministries and agencies, Chambers of commerce and industry, etc.
- Projects financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such as with regard to cleaner production and energy efficiency, higher education, the environment/ climate change, officer retraining, health, CSR, conversion
- Projects financed by Norway within the framework of the EEA financing mechanism (crossborder component from the EU)
- EFTA technical assistance activities in Ukraine
- UNDP-led/funded activities
- Cooperation with the European Business Association and the American Chamber of Commerce in Kiev
