On 25 March 2001 Norway became part of the Schengen area, which includes Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway. The Schengen territory on 21 December 2007 was enlarged to include Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta and the Czech Republic. A Schengen visa (A, B, C), is valid for all 24 Schengen states.
Cyprus, United Kingdom, Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania and Switzerland do not belong to the Schengen territory.
Checks at internal Schengen land and sea borders were abolished on 21 December 2007 with air borders to follow on 30 March 2008. This implies e.g. that passengers arriving in Norway by plane from for instance Poland will be subjected to border control up to 30 March 2008.
The Schengen enlargement will have an impact both on the issuance of visas and border control. In addition, third country nationals holding residence permits in Norway, will be able to travel to the new Schengen states without a visa.
For Norway, the enlargement will not lead to any substancial changes regarding approved border crossing points with the exception of airports, since Norway does not have borders with any of the new Schengen states. Residence permits in the new Schengen states entitles in principle the holder to cross the external border as well as transit and short term stay up to 90 days in Norway.
A single entry visa is sufficient to travel to the Schengen territory also in the case of arriving within the Schengen territory via an airport of the new Member States and subsequent travelling to another Schengen Member State between 21 December 2007 and 30 March 2008. No double entry visa is necessary.
How to apply
It is now possible to lodge an application through the Norwegian Visa Portal, for more information please click here. Visa Portal-applicants may expect shorter processing time, ca. 5 working days, after their submission of all supporting documents and personal appearance at the Embassy.
Applicants who do not have Internet access may still submit their application forms in paper format, but the processing time will be 20 working days.

Who can apply
Anyone can submit an application for visa or residence/work permit. Please note that the passport or the residence permit in Ukraine should be valid for three months beyond the intended stay in Norway, and that there should be at least two empty pages especially assigned for visa and/or permit stickers.
The Embassy is obliged to recieve and consider the application even if no supporting documentation has been provided. Supporting documentation will, however, normally be beneficial for the application. An incomplete application might be immediately refused or forwarded to the UDI for processing. Applicants are required to submit the application in person at the Embassy (cf. §108, Provisions to the Immigration Act).
NOTE! The applicants are strongly recomented to collect all necessary documents and make necessary copies before submitting documents to the embassy. If, upon the explicit request from the staff of the Embassy, supporting documentation is to be sent by fax, mail or e-mail, this should be done with reference to the application number of a registered application. Supporting documentation sent to the Embassy without reference to a registered application will not be considered, and made waste. References sending supporting documentation should do so directly to the applicants, not to the Embassy.
